Boston Marathon Ride

Dear AdventuRiders,

As much as I would like to do another Marathon ride, I think it is probably unwise this year. Bicyclists were officially discouraged last year and there were some incidents of police handing out tickets for minor traffic infractions.

This year we are officially BANNED from the route, although if we got to Boston before they closed the roads we would probably be alright. It would take a very early start though.

There is another group that takes the midnight train to Southboro and rides back to Boston in the wee hours of the morning. How we would get back to Southboro is a mystery to me...

I'll keep thinking,
Bill

This Week - Monday is CANCELLED - Bedford - Groton

Dear AdventuRiders,

Monday doesn't good for bike riding. Somehow "Wintry Mix" isn't exactly what I had in mind. So, I'm going to CANCEL all rides on Monday.

Wednesday looks much better and we will try the Minuteman Bikeway to Somerville again.

Friday we will meet in Groton Center and hopefully find some snow free and low pothole routes.

On Monday, March 31st - CANCELLED.

On Wednesday, April 2nd - Minuteman Bikeway, Bedford.

This is an "Everyone Ride" where you can ride toward Somerville until you are 1/2 tired and then turn around. This is a good way to get in some early season miles without hills and traffic.

STOP - Today's Ride is POSTPONED

Cold, windy, and rainy is not a good way to start the season :-(

Safety Rules

Dear AdventuRiders,

Sorry to bombard your inbox, but it is always good to review our safety measures.

We've been doing this for 10 years now and we have never had a serious accident. We want to keep it that way!

Here is our list of do's, don'ts and suggestions for a safe and enjoyable ride for everyone.

Registration

Dear AdventuRiders,

We ask that you register for AdventuRides through the local recreation departments that support us. They provide advertising and insurance for us and are generally a great resource. It helps us out if you do this before your second ride. Your first ride is free.

If you sign up for the one ride a week option and then want to ride a whole bunch, we can adjust the fee accordingly. Also if you are unable to complete the season, we can adjust for that too.

We don't do this for the money (fortunately) since we basically don't make any. We do this for fun, great companionship, and a love of the outdoors.

Here are your registration choices:

Reminder - Minuteman Bikeway on Friday

Dear AdventuRiders,

The weather is not looking very good tomorrow, but I will wait until tomorrow morning before 8:00 to make the call. The forecast calls for cloudy, windy, and cold in the morning and rain in the afternoon :-(

Here is a checklist for you:
  1. Helmet - REQUIRED. Gloves are a good idea too.
  2. Bicycle in Good Working Order.
  3. PROPERLY INFLATED TIRES. If you are having trouble, come a few minutes early and I will help you. This is surprisingly important!
  4. Water.
  5. Optional - Snack.
  6. Required - Your Smiling Face.
  7. If you want to print out a copy of our Waiver of Liability and initial the yellow boxes and sign at the bottom, it will save us some time at the start. Otherwise I will have copies for you to sign.
I'm not entirely sure I can get to my bike right now since there is a Pipe Organ being constructed by my son for his Senior Project and a Pump Organ that I am refurbishing for my "Senior" Project in my workshop.

Don't worry though since I will find it tonight, PUMP UP THE TIRES, lube the chain and make sure the brakes and derailleurs are working properly. You should do the same.

This ride is for everyone. You can ride toward Somerville until you get 1/2 tired and then you can turn around and go back.

On Friday, March 28th - Bedford, Minuteman Bikeway
  • 9:30 AM - The Everybody Ride will leave Bedford Depot Park.
  • 11:30 PM - LUNCH at Dave's Fresh Pasta in Davis Square.
  • Route Map - Minuteman - Somerville
  • Distance - 23 miles
  • Elevation Gain - 350 feet
  • Unpaved - None
  • Equipment - I plan to bring my ROAD bike.
  • AR Index - roughly equal to 25 flat, smooth miles.

Hope to see you there,
Bill and Carole

This Week - Minuteman Bikeway on Friday

Dear AdventuRiders,

Believe it or not, we are scheduled to start our 20th season on Friday.

Our intrepid rider "The Other Bill" reports that the western part of the Minuteman Bikeway is clear. I will assume the rest of the way to Davis Square is clear too.

So, let's do a ride for everyone starting in Bedford. People can ride toward Somerville until they get half tired and then turn around.

On Friday, March 28th - Bedford, Minuteman Bikeway
  • 9:30 AM - The Everybody Ride will leave Bedford Depot Park.
  • 11:30 PM - LUNCH at Dave's Fresh Pasta in Davis Square.
  • Route Map - Minuteman - Somerville
  • Distance - 23 miles
  • Elevation Gain - 350 feet
  • Unpaved - None
  • Equipment - I plan to bring my ROAD bike.
  • AR Index - roughly equal to 25 flat, smooth miles.

Hope to see you there,
Bill and Carole
