Dear AdventuRiders,
Since I will be in NYC this weekend riding the Bike New York 5 Boro Tour, I haven't had time to plan all the rides for next week. However, here is what I have planned so far.
On Monday, May 3rd, we will ride around around Dunstable and enjoy the views and blossoms.
The Fitness Ride will visit the "field of dreams" in Dunstable and some pretty back roads in Tyngsboro. The route is about 16 miles and quite hilly. There will be a bit of off road as we visit the Massapoag Dam. Here is a map.
The Recreational Ride will enjoy the views from High Street and we will ride a bit of the (very civilized) NA&B Rail Line and see the stone arch bridge. The route is about 13 1/2 miles and a bit hilly. Here is a map.
On Monday, May 3rd, we will meet at Larter Field in Dunstable. The nearest intersection is Groton Street and Dogwood Lane. Here is a map.
* At 9:30 AM - The Fitness ride will leave for "The Field of Dreams". Here is a map.
* At 11:30 AM - We will have a picnic lunch from The Convenient Mann.
* At 12:15 PM - The Recreational ride will leave for High Street. Here is a map.
* At 2:15 PM - We will be back.
On Wednesday, May 5th, we will meet in
Bolton Center. Here is a
map.
* At 9:30 AM - The
Exploration Ride will leave.
* At Noonish - We will have lunch somewhere.
* At 2:15 PM - We will be back.
On Friday, May 7th, we will meet at
Fay Park in Littleton. Here is a
map.
* At 9:30 AM - The
Recreation ride will leave.
* At 11:30 AM - We will have lunch at the Littleton Cafe.
* At 12:15 PM - The
Fitness ride will leave.
* At 2:15 PM - We will be back.
Hope to see you there,

Dear AdventuRiders,
For those of you who went on the "Gale Force Ride" yesterday, and anybody else who enjoys riding past beautiful coastal scenery and history, here are a couple more opportunities.
The 2010 GSW Tri-State Seacoast Century. Saturday and Sunday, September 25, 26. Seacoast Tour de Forts, Sunday, May 16, 2010
Bike, walk, and talk along the waterfront
Everyone knows about the fundraiser bike rides, challenges, and tours along the New Hampshire and Maine seacoasts, but do you know what you are passing? Do you wish to pedal less, see more, and learn a lot about the waterfront? How about a leisurely and supported 18 mile bike ride with time to walk around inside the forts and have someone explain some interesting history of the Portsmouth Harbor area?
This first annual "Seacoast Tour de Forts" is aimed at families and casual cyclists - or cyclists who care to stop drafting and shift down from their 104" gear. Cycling speed and endurance are not expected, nor pledge sheets or huge registration fees. Just bring a well-maintained bike, wear a helmet, take some water and a snack, and enjoy this unique tour for just $25.00 per cyclist. Children in trailers, baby seats, and Tag-Alongs are free. Proceeds are to benefit the Bike-Walk Alliance of NH and Great Bay Services of Newington NH. (Details below.)
To register on-line, please visit the BWA-NH web site www.BWANH.org. Walk-ins are welcome but on-line registration may be easier for everyone.
The 2010 GSW Tri-State Seacoast Century.The 2010

Dear AdventuRiders,
Third time is a charm, right? This ride has been rained out twice, but tomorrow is looking really nice! The forecast calls for mid 50s and sunny in the morning. Near 70 degrees and mostly sunny in the afternoon.
The morning Recreation Ride will travel to Chelmsford Center on the new Bruce Freeman Rail Trail then explore the Cranberry Bogs and finally ride through a bit of Carlisle before returning on the BFRT. The route is about 12 miles and 360 feet elevation gain. It will be all on road.
The afternoon Fitness Ride will also start on the Bruce Freeman and travel south to explore Carlisle and Great Brook Farm State Park. The route is about 16 1/2 miles with 700 feet elevation gain. It will be almost all on road. There is a short stretch of dirt / gravel road in GBFSP.
On Friday April 30th, we will meet at Heart Pond in South Chelmsford. Here is a map.
* At 9:30 AM - The Recreation Ride will leave for Chelmsford Center. Here is a map.
* At 11:30 AM - We will have a picnic lunch at Heart Pond with subs from Kate's Corner.
* At 12:15 PM - The Fitness Ride will leave for Carlisle. Here is a map.
* At 2:15 PM - We will be back.
Hope to see you there,

Dear AdventuRiders,
Well, this storm took its sweet time blowing in here on Monday, and now it seems to be taking its sweet time about blowing out. The forecast is for partly cloudy, breezy and 50 degrees in the morning. After lunch it should be near 60 with the wind increasing to 20 MPH. It will be an off-shore cross wind, so it won't be the usual afternoon sea breeze battle.
BTW, the draw bridge at Seabrook is still one way. I wouldn't follow the detour on Route 1 though, because it is stoplight city!
Jane and Bobbie are carpooling from Concord / Carlisle. If you want to join them, let me know.
Joe and I (and anyone else who care to join us) are carpooling from Shaw's.
Hope to see you there,
Bill and Carole
There are several restaurants along Bow Street in Portsmouth that have decks overlooking Portsmouth Harbor. The Stockpot Restaurant is no more :-( but the River House Restaurant has taken over the location. If the weather doesn't fully cooperate, Poco's Cantina has an enclosed heated deck. If all else fails, we can always hit the Portsmouth Brewery downtown.
Lest you think that our rides are all about eating and drinking, we will be biking along the beautiful NH seacoast with stops at Rye Harbor, Odiorne Point / Fort Dearborn, Fort Stark, New Castle / Fort Constitution, Portsmouth Naval Prison, Strawbery Banke, and Prescott Park. On the way back, we will be riding along portions of the East Coast Greenway.
Its is almost all on road (perhaps a bit of civilized off road at Odiorne), and I will be bringing my road bike.
BTW, it is important to note that we are starting at Hampton North Beach, NOT North Hampton Beach.
On Thursday April 29th, we will ride from Hampton North Beach to Portsmouth along the coast via New Castle. The route is about 32 miles, but is almost flat. Here is a map.
* At 8:45 AM - We can meet at the Shaw's parking lot in Groton and carpool to Hampton North Beach (Real restrooms!)
* At 10:00 AM - We will leave Hampton North Beach for Portsmouth.
* At 12:30 PM - We will have lunch on one the decks overlooking Portsmouth Harbor along Bow Street.
* At 3:00 PM - We will be back to Hampton North Beach.

Dear AdventuRiders,
Sorry for any confusion about this afternoon's ride, the shock of school vacation ending ...
Anyhow, after consulting several people's schedules and the weather forecast (good luck with that), I have decided that

Dear AdventuRiders,
Well, the weather isn't looking good for Monday (80% chance of rain and 50 degrees), but I will schedule it anyway.
Speaking of weather, either Wednesday or Thursday we will be riding the New Hampshire seacoast to Portsmouth for lunch.
On Monday, April 26th, we will meet at the soccer fields on Depot Road in Harvard. Here is a map.

We will ride along the ridge and stop at Bower Springs for a bit of offroading around the ponds. Then its off to the apple orchards on Oak Hill and back to the start. The route is about 15 miles, but very hilly and a bit of offroad. Here is a map.
Lunch will be at BYOL at the soccer field. You can get lunch at Sorrentos or Pizza Bella, but its a bit of a drive.
The afternoon Recreation Ride will go around Bare Hill Pond and visit several outstanding lakeside vistas and the town beach. On the way back we will climb Prospect Hill for amazing views of the mountains. The route is about 12 miles and hilly with some offroad. Here is a map.

Dear AdventuRiders,
Due to popular demand and a nice forecast, I have added a Bonus Friday Morning ride. I don't have a real plan for the ride, but I'm thinking 15 - 20 easy miles with some rail trail and some on road. I'm bringing my road bike, so any off road will be extremely limited / non-existant.
Bonus Ride this Friday, April 23rd.
Its supposed to be Sunny and 55 degrees in the morning and about 60 degrees by noon.
On Friday, April 23rd, we will meet in at the Nashua River Rail Trail Parking in Groton Center. Here is a map. Everyone is welcome. This is intended to be a leisurely ride to get our legs and butts ready for Spring.
Hope to see you there,

Dear AdventuRiders,
The weather is looking gorgeous tomorrow, upper 50s in the morning and upper 60s in the afternoon
The Exploration Ride on Wednesday that will start in historic Shirley Center. The Holdenwood gardens are absolutely amazing this year and we will ride by twice for double the enjoyment.
After visiting Holdenwood, we will go and enjoy the blossoms and views on Flat Hill before going to Lake Shirley. From there it is UP Wallace Hill to Brookline and the Nissitissit River. Then its off to Scotch Pine Farm for lunch (yum). Its about 8 miles back after lunch, and the hills continue with Mount Lebanon, Windmill Hill, and the hill back up to Shirley Center.
The ride is all on road, except for Scotch Pine's driveway, and quite hilly. The route is a little over 30 miles and the vertical is a little over 1300 feet. The major hill is Wallace Hill which isn't that steep, but it goes on and on.
On Wednesday, April 21st, we will meet in Shirley Center (NOT Shirley Village). Here is a map.
* At 9:30 AM - We will leave for Brookline, NH. Here is a map.
* At 12:30 PM ish - We will have lunch at the Scotch Pine Farm in Pepperell.

Dear AdventuRiders,
We don't have any "official" rides this week, but by mid week I will probably be stir crazy, and the weather is looking nice too. So, I scheduled an Exploration Ride for Wednesday that will start in historic Shirley Center. Dear AdventuRiders,
The good news is that I can recycle last week's email with just a couple of edits, the bad news is the weather is crappy again :-( I attached a picture from yesterday's ride when the weather was perfect!
Well, the forecast is not looking very good for tomorrow :-( Its supposed to be low 40s in the morning with a 60% chance of rain. By noon it "improves" to mid 40s with only a 40% chance of rain. I will send out email and update the website with the ride status before 8:00 AM tomorrow.

PS. Here is a video update on Rt 119. Thanks Alex!
This video shows the downstream side of rte 119 with new culverts in place and cofferdam removed. Big hold up now is rebuilding wall and, I assume grouting it with concrete. With rain due tomorrow, this may delay final infill of roadbed. Line of trucks bringing in fill, bulldozer smoothing it out and steamroller compacting it. Upstream side of Rte 119, they are removing cofferdam. All in all, quite the project!

Dear AdventuRiders,
The ride from Hollis, NH to Nashua is one of my favorite rides! The weather is looking smashing as well. The forecast calls for pretty much a carbon copy of today with less wind. BTW, don't forget your sunscreen. I got a bit baked today :-(
Since Hollis is a "Hill Town" and Nashua is a "Mill Town", you can imagine that the morning ride will be downhill and the afternoon ride will be uphill. The route is a little over 25 miles with a little over 1000 feet vertical. There are some gravel / dirt roads on the route along the Merrimac River, Mine Falls Park, and also as we get back to Hollis. Despite that, I am planning to ride my new road bike / toy. It should be warm enough that we can have lunch on the sidewalk at Martha's.
I have attached some pictures from the Monday afternoon ride in Boxborough.
For those of you wondering what the heck they are doing to Route 119, Alex took this
video on Sunday. Thanks Alex!
On
Wednesday, April 14th, we will meet at the Lawrence Barn in Hollis, NH. Here is a
map.
* At 9:30 AM - We will leave for Nashua and the Merrimac River. Here is a
map.
* At Noonish - We will have lunch at Martha's Exchange in Nashua. Here is their
beer menu. They also have good food :-)
* At 2:15 PM - We will be back.

Dear AdventuRiders,
What the heck happened to Spring? Tomorrow's ride will feature almost Summer-like weather. The forecast is for partly cloudy and upper 60s in the morning and low 80s and sunny in the afternoon. At least the humidity will be low, so it should be a lovely ride.
Note the 9:45 AM Start time at Fawn Lake and 10:00 AM at Bedford Depot to allow extra drive time to the start.
Of course the highlight of the ride is lunch at Dave's Fresh Pasta in Somerville, although the ride is very pleasant and low stress as well. BTW, I will be riding my road bike even though the Narrow Gauge Rail Trail isn't paved.
On Wednesday, April 7th, we will meet in Bedford for a ride on the Minuteman Bike Trail to Somerville. Here is a map. There will be two starting points. From Fawn Lake, we will ride the unpaved narrow gauge rail trail to the start of the Minuteman at Bedford Depot. Its about 27 miles round trip. For a shorter, paved, and very flat ride, you can meet us at Bedford Depot for a 22 mile round trip. Everyone is welcome.
* At 9:45 AM - We will leave from Fawn Lake.
* At 10:00 AM - We will pick up riders from Bedford Depot.
* At 11:30 ish - We will have lunch at Dave's Fresh Pasta in Somerville.
* At 2:00 PM - We should be back to Bedford Depot.
* At 2:15 PM - We should be back to Fawn Pond.
* We can continue on to Billerica and back to get our 30 miles in if desired.

Dear AdventuRiders,
I try to keep the volume of email down, but what the heck, this is our "opening day" for the Spring 2010 season! How can you beat 72 degrees and sunny in early April (or any time for that matter).
If you are curious about where we went today (or any day that I remember to bring my GPS), you can see the routes on our "Past Rides" page. It will take you to mapmyride.com and with just 3 more clicks, you can get a map of our adventures. If you are really geeky and bored, you can watch a "Fly-By Video" of the rides. We rode 15 miles this morning, and 13.5 miles this afternoon. YAY!
Our intrepid rider, Alex, shot this video from our "Flood Watch" ride on Friday. Thanks Alex!

Dear AdventuRiders,
OK, one last nag about registering. We can do it all at the first ride, just arrive a few minutes early to complete the paperwork. Check out the details on our Registration page.
This week is Rail Trail Week here at AdventuRides. We find that this is a good way to build up our mileage and stretch our legs without having to deal with too many cars. On Monday, April 5th, we will explore the northern half of the Nashua River Rail Trail and surrounding areas. On Wednesday, April 7th, we will ride the entire Minuteman Bikeway to Somerville with optional side trips on the Bedford Narrow Gauge Rail Trail. On Friday, April 9th, we will cruise the new Bruce Freeman Rail Trail in Chelmsford.
This beautiful weather is supposed to extend into Monday. The forecast is for mid 50's and sunny in the morning and 70 degrees and sunny in the afternoon. Don't forget your sunscreen.
The morning Fitness Ride will go to quaint Hollis Center after visiting the new covered bridge and the Nissitissit River. We will also stop at the Nashua River Rapids on the way back. The route is about 16 miles with 500 feet total ascent. There are a few miles of dirt / gravel road, but other than that it is all paved.
Lunch will be at the Pepperell Spa.
The afternoon Recreation Ride will feature the Nashua River Rapids in Hollis, NH. The route is all on road and between 10 and 13 miles long depending on how we are doing. Its mostly flat with just 360 feet total ascent.
On Monday, April 5th, we will meet in East Pepperell Center. Here is a map.

Dear AdventuRiders,
While you are waiting to dry out, you can take a moment to register for the Spring 2010 AdventuRides season. Check out our Registration page for more details. You don't need to register for tomorrow's preseason ride.
You may not be able to "git heyah from theyah", but the weather is looking terrific for tomorrow. Route 119 is closed on both sides of Groton and Route 225 is closed from West Groton, Good Luck! The forecast is low 50's and partly cloudy in the morning and low 60's and sunny in the afternoon.
Tomorrow's ride will be all on road, mostly because everything else is muddy, but also because I'm planning to ride my shiny new road bike. I think we will head for Pepperell on the Rail Trail to watch the flooding there and also check out the new covered bridge. We can go check out the Nissitissit River and come back along the other side of the Nashua River for a while. I'm thinking about 15 - 20 miles depending on what people want to do. Everyone is welcome.
So, the plan is to meet at the Rail Trail parking in Groton Center and be ready to leave at 9:30 AM. Here is a map.
* At 9:30 AM - We will leave for the floods.
* At 12:30 PM or earlier - We will be back.
* Optional lunch at Main Street Cafe of Filho's.
Hope to see you there,
Bill and Carole
